Contest seeking contemporary interpretation of classic travel poster

What might a contemporary interpretation of the classic travel poster look like? The contest “My Norden Poster 2022” welcomes graphic designers, artists and illustrators from all over the world to bring us their image of the Nordic countries in our time. The finalists will have their work displayed in an upcoming exhibition at Nordiska museet in Stockholm.

March 11 sees the opening of the exhibition Come to Norden, a poster exhibition charting the way the Nordic countries made a place for themselves on the European tourist map in the first half of the 20th century. The posters also give us an idea of the great popularity of leisure travel to and within the Nordic countries from the very beginning: the exotic was close at hand.

Dazzling and artistic travel posters tempted the onlooker with comfortable voyages by ship, and with breathtaking outdoor scenery offering mountains, fjords, lakes and pocket-size capital cities teeming with historical sights. The historical posters mirror the new phenomenon of the early 20th century – leisure time – and the dream of travelling.

What might a travel poster for the Nordic countries look like today? Come to Sweden, Come to Finland and the Affischjägarna association, in collaboration with Nordiska museet, are now calling for fresh interpretations of the classic Nordic travel poster.

The finalists will have their work displayed as a contemporary comment to the vintage posters in the upcoming exhibition at Nordiska Museet. The jury is particularly calling for visual expressions for a future sustainable and ethical way of travelling, and for adventure and experiences in the Nordic countries.

Final submissions due on February 6, 2022. A jury will select five to ten finalists, after which members of the public are invited to place their votes. The winner gets, among other things, a prize sum of 30 000 SEK. Read more about the contest at cometonorden.com.

The exhibition Come to Norden is displayed at Nordiska museet in Stockholm from March 11 to November 6, 2022. It includes about 130 travel posters produced between circa 1890 and 1960, from all of the Nordic countries.
